Hello All,
Energy is critical, directly or indirectly, in the entire process of evolution, growth and survival of all living beings and it plays a vital role in the socioeconomic development and human welfare of a country. Energy has come to be known as a `strategic commodity’ and any uncertainty about its supply can threaten the functioning of the economy, particularly in developing economies. Achieving energy security in this strategic sense is of fundamental importance not only to India’s economic growth but also for the human development objectives that aim at alleviation of poverty, unemployment and meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).Holistic planning for achieving these objectives requires quality energy statistics that is able to address the issues related to energy demand, energy poverty and environmental effects of energy growth.
I take this opportunity to convey my thanks to the SAP Lumira team for providing the requisite information to create dashboard.
In my last project I worked on Visual Intelligence. Today I got to know about the Data Geek Challenge and trying to create a dashboard using the data related to power generation in India across different states via different modes to meet our countries energy needs.
Here is my small attempt to give you a glance through the information regarding the power generation 2013.I got the file from the below mentioned link http://data.gov.in/dataset/monthly-power-generation-september-2013
I downloaded the flat file into my local machine and uploaded into the Lumira tool. Here are some of the interesting information you will get to know from my analysis :
What measures India took in order to provide sustainable demands of Energy generation? We can observe from the below screen short where I can get information that we generate power through 3 different modes via Hydro, Nuclear, Thermal. The Thermal power generation took major chunk is generating the power.
Even though we maintained high infrastructure to generate power, our system is able to generate way below its capacity as follows:
Here we need to analyze what are the reasons behind this : is it because of lack of natural resources ?
Lets see who India is generating power via different resources . Here coal got the major stack seems our infrastructure supports majorly coal, that is one of the reasons for coal scam by UPA government.
I got a doubt in the middle of analysis to see from which region coal is being used as major fuel to generate power ?
Ans : Wester Region
Which state uses Nuclear energy to generate power?
Ans : Maharastra
But if you consider the over all energy production across India Uttar Pradesh stands first.
I will post much more analysis on the same data set in next blog.
Thanks for reading my blog and do write your valuable feedback.

Sharath Borra
